The financial futures market has been developing in South Africa since 1987. The underlying “asset” of a financial future is less concrete and so slightly harder to conceptualise or understand. To take delivery of a ton of maize is easier to understand than taking delivery of an exchange rate or a stock market index. Futures are “derivative instruments”, this means that they rely on something else to derive their value and ‘instruments’ meaning that they are negotiable financial tools. Therefore futures must be linked to an underlying asset . Aspects of the futures market is that it allows for the transfer of risk. It is a place where those who don’t want to take risks (risk averse), can transfer their risk to those who are willing to accept risk (the risk prone). So the futures market allows those who are risk averse to transfer their exposure to those who are risk prone, but exposes both parties to a loss or profit if the price moved in either’s favour. In the futures market, the ability to transfer risk is actually more of importance than the delivery, especially in the financial markets compared with commodities. Język: angielski
